I'll spare his blushes by not giving the name of the shop. To those in the know, it is all so easy, but if you're not? I spoke to a local retailer recently and he had tried a Mac Mini system and eventually gave up. With a lot of help, I got it going after several weeks. I set up a Synology Mac Mini system 5 years ago and had countless problems, some of my own making. I feel qualified to answer this, as a signed up Computer illiterate.

It's all controlled from any Windoze / OS / IOS / Android device on my network as well as the SBT touch screen interfaces. The Asus netbook "music server" is hardwired to my router and serves multiple Squeezebox wireless clients (7 at the last count) around the house, garden and garage, one of which (an SBT) uses my Devialet D200 DAC in the lounge, another uses analogue straight into AudioEngine A5+ on the terrace outside. I use FreeFileSync to synchronise the iMac to the Asus and also a backup disk stored offsite. and it's silent and tiny (I run with the lid closed). More grunt than a NAS plus screen, keyboard etc. I have an elderly Asus EeePC 1005 netbook (dirt cheap) running W10 (was W7) into which I stuffed a 1TB drive (£50 - easy fit - your SSD is a better bet). I rip via DbP / buy / otherwise acquire my FLAC files on an iMac (my equivalent of your desktop system). I happen to prefer JRMC, so the PC is a better fit for me.Ĭlick to expand.I think you're on the right track to get started - there are always better / more expensive / more complex solutions that you can migrate to if you want. Otoh it does let you use Audirvana, which some people like, and which integrates your own music, Tidal and Roon.

I tried using it for my music but my conclusion would be that unless you are an apple zealot it is an expensive solution, isn't fanless (though to be fair I've never heard the fan), can't upgrade the storage. I also happen to have a macmini (for other uses). Flexible, cheap, no lock in, minimum dependency on small company underresourced software development teams. So, a definite thumbs up for a lightweight fanless PC.
I also run LMS to support a legacy squeezebox Touch. I have tried Roon and Tidal, wasn't a fan, but know that if they get better at making people like me happy I can get into them on the PC.
I increasingly use Qobuz to stream which is a great service. I use dBpoweramp to rip because it is good, I use J River Media Center to play because it is good, and in particular lets me easily organise my music the way I want, I use the excellent JRemote to control it from my iPad or iPhone, so I don't need to use the PC.

I've got a really nice little Acer Aspire V11, it's fanless so is silent, has a touch screen which is occasionally useful, cost £300ish, runs Windows 10 and drives Chord DACs and others without any problems - you just need to download the Chord ASIO driver.
